Gateway Impro: Das Fliegende Funken Festival geht 2022 hybrid

Das Fliegende Funken Festival bringt seit 2010 jährlich internationales, hochkarätiges Improvisationstheater nach Bremen und versucht, diese Kunst jedes Mal ein bisschen weiter zu treiben. Dieses Jahr experimentiert das Festival mit dem anspruchsvollen Format der hybriden Shows: Sie finden zeitgleich in der Schaulust in Bremen und an verschiedenen Orten weltweit statt, deutsche Improvisationskünstler:innen treffen auf kolumbianische, taiwanesische und britische Gruppen, zwei Bühnen und zwei live Publika verbinden sich zu einer erweiterten Erfahrung von globalem Dialog. Ziel ist maximale Liveness bei minimalem CO2 Ausstoß, als ein Versuch, eine ökologischere Zukunft von internationalen Festivals durchzuspielen.

Neben den hybriden Aufführungen zeigt das Festival auch drei Shows, in denen die real präsenten Improvisateur:innen vor Ort zu Höchstform auflaufen: Am Eröffnungstag lädt das Festivalensemble Gäste ein, um in digitalen, von einer KI entworfenen Bühnenbildern nie gesehene Geschichten zu inszenieren. Den Höhepunkt an Liveness erreicht das Festival dann mit der Show „Songs from the Sofa“, die als Stargast den Rapper FLO MEGA präsentiert, der aus seinem Leben erzählt, um die Schauspieler:innen zu improvisierten Songs zu inspirieren. In dieser Show treffen gewiefte Theatermacher:innen auf neueste Technik: eine künstliche Intelligenz zaubert jedes beliebige Bühnenbild auf die Leinwand, um genau die Stimmung zu erzeugen, die gewünscht wird. Vier Regisseur:innen begeben sich in einen Wettstreit, wer die neue Technik am Besten zum Inszenieren einer Geschichte verwendet. Die Zuschauer:innen werden an beliebige Orte versetzt, manche realistisch, manche phantastisch, manche völlig unmöglich, und es entsteht eine neue Reisetätigkeit der Vorstellungskraft in unbekannte, künstlich und künstlerisch verfremdete Welten. An artificial intelligence as a stage designer

In this show, clever theater makers meet the latest technology: an artificial intelligence conjures up any stage set on the screen to create exactly the mood you want. Four directors compete to see who can best use the new technology to create a story. The audience is transported to arbitrary places, some realistic, some fantastic, some completely impossible, and a new voyage of the imagination into unknown, artificially and artistically alienated worlds is created. The audience gets to decide which story, which world, which director most cleverly uses AI to enrich the best storytelling with the latest text to image software.

Improbotics

Improbotics is an immersive improv comedy show that combines robots, virtual reality and improvisation. Starting as a human and chatbot duo in 2016, Improbotics evolved into a multinational troupe of actors, comedians and technologists who explore human-computer performance. Während die Tür zur Welt aufgeht, zieht auch ein kalter Wind hinein. Wir können mit jedem kommunizieren, aber mit niemandem zusammenkommen. Long-distance Beziehungen essen Seelen auf und Zoom-Sex macht nur beschränkt Spaß. Aber zwei Menschen begehren sich und begehren dagegen auf. Sie müssen viel überwinden: kulturelle Unterschiede, Klassenunterschiede, Technologie. «Tired of technology» und trotzdem darauf angewiesen, tanzen sie auf der Rasierklinge der verbotenen und unmöglichen Liebe.
Diese Show findet hybrid statt: Während das Improtheater Bremen die Festivalbühne bespielt, schaltet sich Improbotics aus London telematisch dazu und verwendet seine immensen technischen Fähigkeiten, um mit den Videostreams zu jonglieren. Es entstehen collagenhafte, magische Teleportationen.

As the door to the world opens, a cold wind also blows in. We can communicate with everyone, but we can’t get together with anyone. Long-distance relationships eat up souls and zoom sex is only limited fun. But two people desire each other and desire against each other. They have a lot to overcome: cultural differences, class differences, technology. “Tired of technology” yet dependent on it, they dance on the razor’s edge of forbidden and impossible love.
This show takes place hybrid: While Improtheater Bremen plays the festival stage, Improbotics from London telematically joins in, using its immense technical skills to juggle the video streams. The result is a collage-like, magical teleportation.

FESTIVAL CAST

Die Gäste des Festivals kommen aus den verschiedensten Ecken der Welt: Niederlande, Israel, Dänemark und Unterfranken. Sie reisen viel und sie wissen, wie es ist, gute Freunde zurückzulassen, in fremden Städten und billigen Unterkünften die Luft der Einsamkeit einzuatmen und auf ein gutes WIFI angewiesen zu sein. Die Liebe reist immer langsam hinterher, manchmal schafft sie es auch nicht. Die Spieler:innen sind allesamt erfahrene Improspieler:innen, sie treffen sich auf dieser Bühne vielleicht zum ersten und letzten Mal und haben keine Zeit für Höflichkeiten.

The guests of the festival come from different corners of the world: Netherlands, Israel, Denmark and Lower Franconia. They travel a lot and they know what it’s like to leave good friends behind, to breathe the air of loneliness in foreign cities and cheap accommodation and to depend on good WIFI. Love always travels slowly behind, sometimes it doesn’t make it. The players are all experienced improvisers, they meet on this stage perhaps for the first and last time and have no time for pleasantries.

Festivalensemble

In dieser Theatercollage geht es um die Frage der Abwesenheit. Was fehlt und wer fehlt? Die Leerstellen zu finden ist nicht einfach, denn das was uns in die Augen und Ohren dringt, ist ja schrill und vielfältig. Trotzdem gibt es in jedem Sturm angeblich einen Ort, wo Alles stillsteht und man sich im Zentrum befindet. Die Spielenden bewegen sich auf diesen einen stillen Moment zu und mit etwas Glück finden sie etwas, was bleibt.
Die Leinwand bleibt leer bei dieser Show, sie findet komplett analog statt. Ausgewählte Mitglieder des Festivalensembles und geladene Gäste erzeugen einen Sturm der Gefühle und Geschichten. Mit der Erfahrung von vielen Jahren als Improvisationskünstler:innen finden sie überraschende Wendungen und unvorhersehbares Glück.

A collage is about the question of absence.

This theater collage is about the question of absence. What is missing and who is missing? To find the voids is not easy, because what enters our eyes and ears is shrill and manifold. Nevertheless, in every storm there is supposedly one place where everything stands still and one finds oneself in the center. The players move towards this one silent moment and with a bit of luck they find something that remains.
The screen remains blank for this show, it takes place entirely in analog. Selected members of the festival ensemble and invited guests create a storm of emotions and stories. With the experience of many years as improvisation artists, they find surprising turns and unpredictable luck.

Third Person Theatre

Third Person theatre company are an improvisation company that work on realistic dramatic improvisation. The company has been in existence for more than 20 years, exploring emotionally truthful improvisation and has developed many formats in that time. Our initial basis was the combination of the Meisner technique with improvisation. We have included many theatre techniques into our practice and since lockdown have explored cinematic techniques to develop the work from theatre to cinema via zoom use. The company focuses on emotional reality and thus do not use mime but real props to develop the work. The work has also negated the need for audience suggestions as the strength of the improvisation lies in the real and present emotional state of each actor at the start of the play/movie.

Die Theatergruppe Third Person ist eine Improvisationstruppe, die sich mit realistischer dramatischer Improvisation beschäftigt. Die Kompanie besteht seit mehr als 20 Jahren, erforscht emotional wahrhaftige Improvisation und hat in dieser Zeit viele Formate entwickelt. Unsere ursprüngliche Grundlage war die Kombination der Meisner-Technik mit Improvisation. Wir haben viele Theatertechniken in unsere Praxis einbezogen und seit Lockdown filmische Techniken erforscht, um die Arbeit vom Theater zum Kino über den Zoom-Einsatz zu entwickeln. Die Truppe konzentriert sich auf die emotionale Realität und verwendet daher keine Pantomime, sondern echte Requisiten, um die Arbeit zu entwickeln. Die Arbeit hat auch die Notwendigkeit von Publikumsanregungen negiert, da die Stärke der Improvisation in der realen und gegenwärtigen emotionalen Verfassung jedes Schauspielers zu Beginn des Stücks/Films liegt.

Sechs Menschen in zwei Räumen, getrennt durch viele Meilen Luft und Wasser, verbunden durch ein digitales Fenster. Sie können sich sehen und hören, aber nicht berühren, riechen oder schmecken. Sind sie Freunde? Sind sie Gegner? Werden sie sich unterstützen oder zugrunde richten? CAMERA OBSCURA ist eine Entdeckungsreise von in das Unglück und möglicherweise das Glück körperlicher Trennung bei virtuellem Kontakt.

Six humans in two rooms divided by miles of air and water, joined by a digital window, they can see and hear each other but can’t touch, smell or taste each other. Are they friends? Are they rivals?  Can they support each other or will they ruin each other? Camera Obscura is an exploration of the pitfalls and possibly the pratfalls of physical separation with virtual contact.
This show takes place hybrid: While Fliegende Funken Ensemble plays the festival stage, Third Person from London joins in telematically and transports a great deal of authenticity onto the screen. The result is an honest encounter between two renowned groups across the digital divide.

Das Ensemble „OleUndKnut“ besteht aus Verena Lohner, Schauspielerin und bildende Künstlerin, Adriano Werner, Schauspieler und Poet, Mark Moody, Musiker und Claudia Stump, Schauspielerin und Regisseurin. Die vier Akteure haben in den letzten Jahren wertvolle Beiträge zum Theater im ländlichen Raum erstellt. Sie greifen auf ein Repertoire an Arbeitsmethoden zurück, das für schnelle Ergebnisse sorgt. Dabei bedienen sie sich aus allen Kunstsparten: bildende Kunst, Musik, Poetry, Bewegungstheater und Tanz. So erschaffen sie neue theatrale Spielformen für die Bühne, um Theater nachhaltig erfahrbar zu machen.

The ensemble “OleUndKnut” consists of Verena Lohner, actress and visual artist, Adriano Werner, actor and poet, Mark Moody, musician and Claudia Stump, actress and director. The four actors have created valuable contributions to rural theater in recent years. They draw on a repertoire of working methods that ensures quick results. In doing so, they draw from all artistic genres: visual arts, music, poetry, movement theater and dance. Orrantia & Friends

DANIEL ORRANTIA is an artist interested in the transformative power of performance. He can wear many hats, from performing on stage to teaching and working on innovative formats for improvisation and theater. Building his practice over the last 15 years, he is well known for working with elements of performance and visual arts, including painting, and drawing. His innate curiosity in the field of improvisation led him to create and co-direct the PICNIC theatre group, as well as the MonkeyFest International Festival, currently in its ninth edition. A non-stop series of shows and workshops has him travelling around the world; recent highlights include participation at the Improvember Improtheaterfestival in München, Shows and workshops in Brno, workshops series in Vienna and the world premier of his latest solo show, The Fortune Teller. He is also known for his work with Speechless, a wordless show driven by musical scores that has been delighting audiences in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East.
For this show he will join forces with some of his inspiring Columbian colleagues.

FLOMEGA

Florian Bosum alias FLOMEGA ist in Bremen geboren und in der Neustadt aufgewachsen. Bekannt wurde er mit dem Song “Zurück”, den er beim ESC (Eurovision Song Contest) aufführte. Er ist der erfolgreichste Sänger, der Soulmusik auf deutsch singt. Zu seinen Vorbildern gehören Teddy Pendergrass, Stevie Wonder und natürlich James Brown. Seine musikalischen Wurzeln liegen beim Hip Hop, die Musik, die ihn als Teenager am meisten prägte. Bevor er sang, rappte er auf deutsch und englisch. Sein Talent hört da aber nicht auf: FLOMEGA ist außerdem Komponist, Multi-Instrumentalist, Poet und Zeichner.

Guts Improv Theatre

Guts Improv Theatre was founded by Wu, Hsiao-Hsien in 2004 after she studied from BATS Improv, San Francisco. Guts Improv is the first theatre company that dedicated to improvisational theatre in Taiwan. We envision to unleashing more Taiwanese’s innate skill and make Taiwan a more creative place trough professional improv performances and workshops.
Since 2014, Guts Improv runs our own theatre space- Guts Improv Mainstage and perform improv weekly in Taipei. We produce short form improv like Theatresports and Improv Jam. We also produce long form improv and improvised musical including Haorld, Super Directors, Improvised Dystopia and Improvised Broadway.
For more than 15 years, Guts Improv provides improv workshops and applied improv training to actors, teachers, facilitators, engineers, social workers, medical professionals and managers.
In 2020–2021, Guts Improv collaborated with the largest chain cinema of Taiwan and performed improv in 4 cities around Taiwan for 28 sold out shows. We also produce a weekly podcast show called “Improvism” that sharing contents of Keith Johnstone’s book “Impro.” Besides Taiwan, Guts Improv had also brought Taiwanese Improv to Hong-Kong, Macau, China, Australia, New Zealand.

Raketos

Die Raketos sind ein modernes und facettenreiches Ensemble aus Berlin und spielen fantasie- und anspruchsvolle Charaktere in Genres und Stilen verschiedenster Art. Sie sind überzeugt davon, dass Inszenieren eine Arbeitsform von gestern ist. Jeder Abend bringt seine eigene Geschichte und jede Menge Emotionen mit.
Seit 2016 spielen die RAKETOS regelmäßig im BühnenRausch im Prenzlauer Berg und anderen Spielorten in Berlin – oder zu Gast z.B. in Potsdam oder Hamburg. Und jetzt eben auch in Bremen!

Since 2016, the RAKETOS have been playing regularly at BühnenRausch in Prenzlauer Berg and other venues in Berlin — or as guests in Potsdam or Hamburg, for example. And now also in Bremen!

In Taiwan ist es Abend, in Bremen ist es noch nicht einmal Mittag. Über die Grenzen von Geographie, Kultur und Technologie hinweg begrüßen sich zwei Theatergruppen in dem uns alle verbindenden Feld: dem Spiel.

Die Spieler*innen erschaffen einen Ort (ein Mehrfamilienhaus, eine Wohnanlage, Kleingärten …) des Zusammenlebens und Szenen einer Nachbarschaft. Über/mit der universellen Sprache des Improvisationstheaters erkunden die Spieler*innen das Zusammenspiel über die Grenzen hinaus.

In Taiwan it is evening, in Bremen it is not even noon. Across the borders of geography, culture and technology, two theater groups greet each other in the field that unites us all: play.

The players create a place (an apartment building, a housing estate, allotments …) of living together and scenes of a neighborhood. Using the universal language of improvisational theater, the players explore the interplay across borders.

How does a good cooperation work? How do we want to live together?
